Everything You Need to Know About Face Lifts & Neck Lifts

What are “Face Lifts” & “Neck Lifts?”

These popular surgeries are designed to do exactly what it says on the tin: lift the skin on the face or neck to minimize wrinkles. Neck lifts can also help to minimize saggy skin around the neck (sometimes derisively referred to as “turkey neck”) or double chins. There are several types of face lifts. The Skin Lift is the most common type of lift, wherein the skin around the face/neck is lifted, as well as a layer of fat underneath. SMAS/extended SMAS, deep plane, and composite. These are more intensive cosmetic surgeries that can lift a layer of muscle along with the skin and fat, leading to a more “youthful” appearance compared to a standard skin lift.

What Happens During Face & Neck Lift Surgery?

Regardless of the type of lift, general anesthesia is administered and a small incision is made either by the ear or base of the chin. This incision is then used to lift skin, fat, and sometimes muscle, tightening the layers, and smoothing out the surface of the skin.

Face & Neck Lift After Care & Recovery

Patients can expect some degree of bruising, typically around the incision site. Swelling will occur and last for several days, sometimes as long as two weeks. Patients will likely feel some stiffness or tightness during this time. Exercise is not recommended for four weeks post-procedure. As with other cosmetics surgeries, there is a risk of infection and bleeding.
