Everything You Need to Know About Breast Augmentation Surgery

What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast surgeries modify a woman’s or man’s breasts, and may be done for a variety of reasons. In some cases, it’s purely cosmetic (plastic surgery), but in other cases, the procedures are medically necessary.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation Surgery?

There are actually several different procedures that are all considered “breast augmentation.” They include:

Breast Implant Surgery: restore fullness and lost volume.

Breast Lift Surgery: helps to lift sagging skin for improved shape.

Breast Reduction Surgery: for women that have disproportionately large, uncomfortable breasts, a breast reduction surgery can create a smaller, more ideal appearance and reduce back pain.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery: The most common time for this is after breast cancer surgery.

Breast Cancer Surgery
Lumpectomy:
Removing a section of breast tissue to treat either a tumor or cancer.
Mastectomy: Either part or all of the breast and possibly the nearby lymph nodes are removed to get rid of cancers.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery (for Men): Some men have a condition called gynecomastia, where their breast tissues are enlarged. Reconstruction can help minimize this.

Breast Cancer Surgery (for Men): Men can also develop breast cancer, and the cancer is removed with surgery.

Top Surgery: In Transgender men, or Transmasculine People( FTM) the procedure is called Top surgery and will include a bilateral mastectomy with chest reconstruction

Regardless of the surgery needed, it’s important to educate yourself on the procedures and find a surgeon you’re comfortable with.

Breast Augmentation Surgery After Care

Because of the wide variety of augmentations available, recovery can vary. Generally speaking, patients can expect to recover for 1 to 6 weeks after surgery. This includes several days of rest post-surgery; and several weeks before patients can return to normal activities. As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection or bleeding at the surgical site. Proper care and cleaning is imperative.
